Snark, Critic and Pop!

Somewhere in America, Brian Alterman’s head is exploding: Premeiring NEXT Saturday, March 17th, the SyFy Channel is capitalizing on St. Patrick’s Day Mania by unveiling their latest, originalist cinematic classic, Leprechaun’s Revenge! A clip of the film is posted here (alas no leprechaun sighting yet).

Sadly, Warwick Davis is not playing the Leprechaun. Instead, they’ve cast Billy Zane. No, not as the Leprechaun, but our pal Billy is in the movie. The Leprechaun is being portrayed by Kevin Mangold, best known as a “stunt jockey” from Seabiscuit.

With Shannen Doherty! Oh how the mighty — or, once less weak, I suppose — are fallen!

Granted, not every channel can air football, parades, or the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Special where Linus worships the Great Gobbler who rises out of the Turkey Patch. But why does ABC equate Thanksgiving with vapid, sensationized pop music? (Although, Lady Gaga has been providing the voice of Charlie Brown’s teacher for years, so there is some connection.)
