In the 1950′s Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim took Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and retold it for the 20th century as West Side Story. Who could possibly forget the drama, the music, the romance, and the fact that Tony runs through Spanish Harlem yelling Maria and only one woman comes to her window. It was a smash hit which has remained enduringly popular. Now, the Royal Shakespeare Company is trying to do the same thing with Anthony and Cleopatra with near fatal results! (continue reading…)
